The Boxcar Children (Review and Giveaway)

Watch the official trailer.

About the movie: Four orphaned and homeless siblings happen upon an abandoned boxcar, which with a little creativity and hard work, they gradually furnish with all the comforts of home. Fearful that they will be sent to live with the reputedly cruel grandfather they have never met, the children keep their new home a secret - until a serious illness forces them to reveal themselves in order to save young Violet.

Featuring an all-star cast of voice actors, including Academy Award Nominee Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now), J.K. Simmons (Spiderman), Zach Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Joey King (Fargo), Mackenzie Foy (Twilight series), and Jadon Sand (LEGO: The Movie). This is the very first full-length, animated feature adaptation of Gertrude Chandler Warner's best-selling classic!

The movie is approved for children of all ages. My 3 and 4 year old's were able to keep up with the story and asked several questions throughout the film. Mainly they were about why certain characters where so mean or why the children didn't have a home. We talked about each of the different children and how important it was for each of them to support each other.

The movie is based on the book by the same name, The Boxcar Children. This book is ideal for children ages 7-12, or in 2nd to 7th grade. My own children, especially my daughter who loves adventure and mystery stories, liked this movie. We plan to pick up the book at the library and read it at bedtime. I had never heard of The Boxcar Children series before, but after watching the movie, it looks like a series we would enjoy! The mystery themes include animals, ghosts and monsters, history, outdoor adventure, and even science and technology, among many other themes.

If you visit The Boxcar Children website, you will be able to find activity pages and book activity pages. They are a great addition to the book series and we definitely plan to use them when we start reading the series, though we might wait a year or two to use it for homeschooling. The series is HUGE. Over 100 titles for mystery-loving children to enjoy. We look forward to reading these books, because some of them could be used to supplement unit studies.

The Boxcar Children is coming to DVD on August 19th! VOD also available!
