Baked Snowman

A while ago we made a simple craft that we called Dino Eggs. They were essentially baked cotton balls. The fun thing about these baked cotton balls is that they are covered in a flour mixture that can be dyed any colour you wish! So there are endless combinations that you can make with them! We created a pumpkin in October, a turkey in November and a Christmas tree in December, although I never posted them on the blog. It's now January and we have gotten lots and lots of snow! So I felt it was the perfect time to create a "Baked Snowman"!

This happens to be one of the kids favourite activities, although we typically only do it once a month and stick to a theme. In February we will make hearts, in March we will make clovers or perhaps a pot of gold, etc. It's basically our go-to holiday craft because it's so simple and fun!

To make baked cotton balls, you'll need:
- cotton balls
- 1 cup of flour
- 1 cup of water
- food colouring (liquid or gel)
- a mixing bowl and whisk
- a baking sheet with aluminum foil

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees and when you are finished, bake them for 45 minutes and let cool completely before pulling them apart!

I used three different sized bowls to make a colourful snowman dipping station! We used orange for a carrot nose, black for coals and white for the snowman's body.

If your kids don't like touching sticky materials, you can offer them a spoon to dip the cotton balls into the flour mixture and coat them and transfer them to the baking sheet. You'll want to completely coat the cotton balls.

The snowman still came out pretty cute!

After they made him, Munchkin decided to "paint" on him and smeared a lot of the black dye. Bean was upset that her snowman got dirty.

But then she decided to mix up the remaining mixture and poured and transferred them from bowl to bowl.

Finished product after the snowman spent 45 minutes baking in the oven. Now he's toasty warm! Bean even named him Olaf, after the Frozen snowman. And funny enough, that's also a snowman who wants to feel warm!

The kids will be able to play with him in the morning after breakfast. Which is perfect, because I'll be busy making cookies and other goodies for our final Christmas party!
