Witch's Brew Oobleck

Who doesn't love messy play? We love messy play! And to fit with the Halloween theme we have been working with, we decided to create a witch's brew! Bean LOVES witches. She doesn't care if they are nice witches or green-faced evil witches or glittery witches. She just loves running around with a wand and a witches hat and riding a broomstick and yelling, "Bam! Bam!" as she casts spells on various things around the house. But a witch isn't complete without a cauldron to brew potions.

Bean and I ventured into the kitchen and gathered up some brewing essentials. Various spoons and spatulas and mashers and some pumpkin heads and mini cauldrons and little Halloween ingredients.

On the side, while they were playing in the big cauldron brewing up their oobleck potions, I was painting some of the other mini cauldrons.

These were bought at Target and I love them because they have little flames at the bottom!

So I painted them with red, orange and yellow flames. And I wasn't too worried about painting outside the lines (because I couldn't find any tiny paintbrushes and had to use a chunky one), because when it was dry I used a toothpick to scrape off the excess paint. They came out great!

Back to their brewing... I added a few drops of food colouring to the pumpkins and cauldrons.

And then poured in some water.

Bean poured in a good amount of cornstarch (also known as corn flour).

And Munchkin used the teaspoon spoon to scoop a few drops of food colouring into the cornstarch.

Bean said this one was ketchup. :)

And of course, all the colours got mixed in. We used red, green, blue and yellow.

So eventually when all the colours were mixed in, it looked like hot cocoa! Bean really enjoyed using the turkey baster.

Then once the oobleck was all mixed together, they started to add in the special Halloween ingredients. There were glow-in-the-dark spiders, stretchy rats, some insects, frogs, lizards, snakes, pumpkins, apples, acorns, leaves and corn on the cobs. As well as some Halloween erasers.

Oh yeah, messy play is messy, but it's fun!

Gotta get close to that cauldron.

Stir, stir, stir. The whole time she was singing about adding witchy stuff and how she couldn't wait to feed the potion to her kitty to make it real. (We are reading Pinocchio at bedtime.) And don't worry, Skippyjon Jones is pure of heart. Though she completely forgot about feeding him. Thankfully. Oobleck would have been so hard to wash off of him!

This messy sensory play was so much fun! We can't wait to create more witches potions and brew with different ingredients!
